Success stories for ABAAD’s Jina Al Dar, program against gender-based violence.
How do we write stories of hope while stressing the severity of violence? This was my biggest challenge writing these NGO success stories about Jina Al Dar for ABAAD’s blog. Through the lens of the ABAAD team, I arrived at sober, comforting, yet powerful narratives.
Talking about gender-based violence is weighted, heavy, and often met with helplessness and pent up rage. But with Jina Al Dar, newfound hope lies, with an emphasis on collective healing, and childish joy.
Jina Al Dar’s bus arrives at the doorsteps of marginalized communities that have trouble accessing social services centers in Lebanon. The team gives awareness sessions on all forms of violence that women and girls might be subjected to. With its quirkiness, Jina Al Dar brings lightheartedness to children, while the women of the household attend sessions to relieve what is heavy on the heart. It reaches women and girls to provide life-saving services, to empower them to exercise their rights, gain full agency and fulfill their potentials as full and equal members of society.
